Shofar & Cholent: The Secret Connection | Rosh Hashanah on Shabbos
This year, Rosh Hashanah, how Olenu Latova and Shambhaz Kodesh coincide, they fall out on the same day, which means we will not be blowing the shofar on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. And while for some this might be upsetting, it might be, oh my gosh, how can we not blow the shofar? I want to share with you something. We have something else in place of shofar, and it's not a joke, it's called chalent. It's brought down from the Heligur of Mayor of Primishlan that the same angel, the same malach that's appointed over Tekias Shofer is the same malach that's appointed over the chalent. In the Sefer Mara Deshmainsa brings down Keshachol Rosh Hashanah Bishabas, when Rosh Hashanah falls out on Chabbas, like this year, Hayo Noigle Maicholanikra Chalant. The custom is for yiddin to eat chalant. And it brings in the footnote, Shin Chaftes, footnote 329 from the Lakudeshai. The Mata Ephraim, and I'm going to read this to you. It's brought down in the Mata Ephraim Simon 583 Siv Gimel. He says, In Lechho, poilin vikinos, we don't eat like beans, legumes on Rosh Hashanah at night or of day. Why not? Because it's marbim kicha vini vina. It makes a person have more phlegm and mucus. And so therefore what? What's the problem on Rosh Hashanah? Keep a roshana tsarhstika, beycer. We need to be extra quiet on Rosh Hashanah. To have kavana with what the Shlik Ziba is saying. And certainly, he says, Mikoloshikane is Tikash. Certainly, at the time of Tikir Shefa, we have to be able to listen. But through a person having this type of food in his body, he's going to come to you know, coughing and wretching and making all these noises, and he won't be able to have kavana. Shai dechoch bigaran the hitsikihvania to get it out of his system is patnamashem. He's going to ruin it for himself and for others. Adkan, that's it. And then it brings down from the Hiligur of Mayor of Primishlan that Amalakha Mamuna Al Mitwashaifer, the same angel that's appointed over shofar. Mamuna Gamalamaikal Chalant, he's also pointed over Chalant. But the chem Burashana, Shachal Bishabas, and therefore on Rashana, it falls out on Chabbas. Sha'ichem by Chalan ain't sorchhitkoyo. There we um there's no need to blow, you know, and chalent is filled with beans. Usually on Roshana, we shouldn't have this type of food because it's mar beki chavani, and you're gonna make noise and it's gonna stare the shofu. But on chabbas, we don't have the shofar, we have something else. We have the chalent in place of the shofar, and the same malach that's appointed over the shofar is the same one that's appointed over the the chalent. It's brought down from the Kretchnaf Rebbe that the Yih Ratson, we say before Tkius, what do we say? We say the name of the malach. We actually, the his name is Tuf Shin Bez Shin, which has the letters Shabbas and Shin, because it's telling us that we know the Malach doesn't have two missions, only has one. So during the rest of the year, right? During one only one time of year, the Malach has his mission. That's one of the shins, that's Scheifer. But the rest of the year, what's he involved in? Shabbas. It's the other letters in his name. He's involved in the he's Mamuna, he's appointed over the Michel Shabbas, and the primary Michel of Shabbos Kadesh is the chalent, it's the hot, hot chalent. The Belzerov is brought down what would happen on a year. On the year that Rajashana and Shabbos coincided, and we don't blow shofar, it was brought to him chalent for Sudas Shabbos, and it was steaming hot. So what did he do? The bells thereof, he was blowing the steam from that was coming from the chalent. But he wasn't just stambling it like you blow a hot food. He was it was clear that he was having kavana, the same kavanos that would be had for the shaifer, he was having for the blowing of the hot chalent. I mean, this is unbelievable. Kimachiloku bel, I don't speak Yiddish, but belizen un shafer odder belezen un yoch. I don't know what that means, but it's something to do with this. Just an unbelievable um idea. And I'll share with you one more thing about chalent. Once we're on the topic of chalent. First of all, if you don't have chalent and you're listening to this in time, please put up a chalent. If you're not going to be able to put up a chalent, knock on your neighbor's door and have some chalent. Even if you're not gonna eat it, blow on it. Have cavanas of the scheifer. Just connect with the connect with the notion of chalent, the microshad is it's an amazing thing. Uh, you know, the it's brought down in the sefer si'ah Yehuda from the Mashkia, Hurrichatskil Levenstein, that somebody who doesn't have kavana for the mitzah of sukkah, so he brings this, it's so funny. He says, He thinks he's sitting in a sukkah and eating chalent. Uba'ems, but in reality, sukhah, he's really sitting in the chalent and eating the sukkah. Mamish uh palat to think about. And this sefer brings down actually a connection to Tkir Shafer. He says, in the name of the it's brought down from the Palayoites or there's their Papo in the section of Rosh Hashanah, who says in the name of the Rashash, Shatokia Shofu Venom Messiah Beshuva, somebody blows the shofar and does not um is not being oh you're in shuva, he's not thinking about the shuva, so then it's basic, it I wouldn't say it's pointless, but he says, It's just like stama musician that's playing. If a person is blowing the shofar and he doesn't have the kabbana of chuvah, so he's just like stama musician playing. A person has to have in mind what he's doing um to elevate himself and to mamish understand, okay, what what am I doing over here? And maybe we could say, just putting this all together, when a person eats chalit this week, the shabb is where we don't have the shofar. The chalet is in place of the shafer. And a person, when he's eating the chalat this week, he should have kavana being oy-bitchuba. Uh otherwise, you know, it's not like you know, I mean, obviously, we're not sitting in a sukkah, but you know, it we we want to be able to tap into what the chalnut is is is doing for us. And again, this might sound like a whole joke. I'm just reading it to you sources. I'm reading you from the Sefer Mara de Shmais, which brings down from Rav Mayor Primishlan, and uh reading from Chatska Levinstein, and a story brought from the Belzarov. So take it how you want, take it or leave it. And um Ritzusham, we shall be Zeichev, Rakh Siva, Chasima, Taiva. Go ahead, eat that shot, blow on it, and be my bitchuva, and have the most uplifting and meaningful day. And Ritz Hashem, we shall be written and sealed in a book of life. All the best.
